EU Commissioner: Good prospects for Greece's return to markets

Greece has good prospects to gradually return to markets nine months before completing the current programme, EU Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs Pierre Moscovici said on Thursday, following the European Court of Auditors’ report.

Moscovici pointed out that nine months before the end of Greece’s Stability and Support Programme, the country has met its commitment to reform and is beginning to see the benefits. The economy is growing again and unemployment is declining compared to the exceptionally high levels previously recorded, he said.

According to the Commissioner, recent positive developments include the conclusion of the second programme review, the closure of the “excessive deficit procedure” and, more recently, a further loosening of capital controls. Consequently, a gradual return to the markets has become a credible prospect for Greece, he noted.

Moscovici noted that previous decisions were taken amid a deep, extended and unprecedented crisis. “It is time to leave this difficult chapter behind us,” he said and added: “The Commission will continue to support Greece in its efforts to boost growth, increase employment and return to financial markets on a sustainable basis – for the benefit of all Greek citizens.”
