Various projects planned to take place in Larnaca District, on the south east coast of Cyprus, which would change the character of the town, were discussed during a broad meeting held at the Presidential Palace chaired by the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades.
The meeting was attended by four Ministers, namely Ministers of Transport, Communications and Works Marios Demetriades, Minister of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism Yiorgos Lakkotrypis, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Nicos Kouyialis and Minister of Education and Culture Costas Kadis as well as the Acting Mayor of Larnaca and local officials.
In statements following the meeting, the Minister of Transport said that President Anastasiades decided to convene this meeting to assess the progress in the implementation of the projects and discuss actions needed to speed up their implementation.
He said that the two important projects are the removal of fuel storage facilities from Larnaca sea front and the development of the Larnaca port and marina.
Regarding the removal of fuel storage facilities, Demetriades said that this project is underway, adding that although some issues are still pending there is no turning back.
On the development of the port and marina, he said the aim is for the tender procedure to begin in October and for the signature to take place in 2017.
The Minister said that there is a delay in some projects, noting that the President gave specific instructions to speed up the implementation of the projects. “I feel a constructive dialogue was held which will yield results,” he added.
“What is important is that the character of the area of Larnaca is about to change to a tourist oriented area from an industrial storage area which is today” he concluded.
