German tourism: Turkey's strong comeback expected by tour operators

Rapid growth in demand for the German market for Turkey, which began at the end of 2017 and continued in the first 6 weeks of 2018, is recorded by the largest German tour operators, such as DER Touristik, TUI, Bentour and ?ger Tours, who announced that they would expand their already bigger capacity in Greece’s neighboring country.

German Tour Operator FTI had planned a great expansion of capacity beforehand by launching an additional charter flight to Bodrum. Its goal is to attract 1 million visitors to Turkey in 2018.

In 2017 Turkey attracted only 3.5 million German tourists, i.e. 2 million fewer than the record year of 2015.

The comeback is particularly strong in the demand for Turkey by families, with one in four passengers arriving at Antalya airport under the age of 12, according to data from bookings through ?ger Tours.

A key factor for Turkey’s recovery is the restoration of German travel agents’ confidence in the destination, notes RTI’s director Ralph Schiller.
