Athens Airport One Step Closer to the Single European Sky – High-Performance Hub Project Completed

Athens International Airport S.A. (AIA) has successfully completed the Action related to the project “The evolution of AIA into a high-performance hub within the European air traffic management network.”

The project is co-financed by the European Union (Action No. 2017-EL-TM-0158-W) under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) 2017 – Transport Sector and is a key initiative for the transformation of Europe’s aviation landscape, aiming at the implementation of the Single European Sky (SES) framework.

AIA’s contribution underlines the company’s commitment to collaborative initiatives for the design and deployment of an entirely new and highly efficient Air Traffic Management (ATM) environment, customer-centric and focused on sustainability and efficiency.

The recently completed part of the project forms an integral component of a six-year flagship program spanning five interconnected and parallel projects, aimed at developing and implementing advanced airport operational models (ConOps). These include cutting-edge system functionalities and processes for collaborative performance management and the integration of airport operations into the wider European Air Traffic Network. The program adopts innovative operational and technological solutions, leveraging digital transformation roadmaps, while simultaneously training stakeholders through participatory approaches and effective change management. The outcome enhances both network and airport performance, thereby supporting the Single European Sky objectives of operational efficiency, reduced environmental footprint, and improved passenger experience — all of which are also critical to AIA’s strategy for sustainable development and social responsibility.

The successful completion of this project resulted in AIA receiving a “Highly Commended” distinction at the ACI EUROPE 2025 Digital Transformation Award, in cooperation with the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU).

For these reasons, we extend our gratitude to the EU/CINEA (European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency) and the EYSSAÅ Unit (Special Coordination Service for Planning, Evaluation and Implementation – CEF Mechanism) of the Ministry of Economy and Finance for their support. We also thank our industry partners ALG Globe Infrastructure Advisors SLU, SITA Information Networking Computing B.V., the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS), and AirportLabs Limited, as well as our operational partners Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority / Air Navigation Service Provider (HCAA/ANSP), Eurocontrol, Aegean Airlines, Sky Express, Goldair Handling, Swissport Hellas, and Skyserv, all of whom were invaluable contributors throughout the lifecycle of the Program.

AIA remains committed to long-term initiatives aimed at developing integrated airport solutions and services, leveraging the expertise and know-how of its partners to continuously enhance safety and service quality, both in ground operations and in airspace management. To this end, the implementation of the current project “Extended Airport Operations Plan (e-AOP)” by 2027, under the European Commission co-financed CEF 2022 framework and Common Project One (CP1), represents the next major milestone on our roadmap.
