Passenger Traffic at “Eleftherios Venizelos” Reaches 34 Million in 2025

2025 closed with a particularly positive performance for Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos,” as passenger traffic reached 33.99 million passengers, recording an increase of 6.7% compared to 2024. This performance confirms Athens’ strong position on the aviation and tourism map, as well as its upgraded role as an international connectivity hub.

The increase was mainly driven by international passenger traffic, which rose by 8.6% to 24.36 million. Domestic traffic stood at 9.63 million, showing a more moderate increase of 2.2%, reflecting that the main momentum came primarily from foreign markets and direct international connections.

December 2025 also showed a strong performance, with 2.31 million passengers handled, up 8.4% compared to December 2024. Growth was recorded in both market segments, with domestic traffic increasing by 5.5% and international traffic rising by 9.6% to 1.68 million, confirming that the year closed with strong momentum.

The overall picture of 2025 reflects a clear transformation. Athens is strengthening its international profile, attracting an ever-growing number of visitors from abroad, while airlines continue to invest in new direct routes and increased capacity. At the same time, the domestic market shows stabilization at high levels, indicating a maturation of demand.

The city is now steadily emerging as a city-break destination, with strong tourist flows throughout the year, and not merely as a transit point for the Greek islands. The summer months show signs of “saturation,” although traffic remains above 2024 levels. From June to September, total monthly passenger traffic ranged between 3.45 and 3.88 million passengers, with increases—driven by international traffic—of 4.6% in June, 4.1% in July, 6.7% in August, and 5.4% in September.

At the same time, the shoulder months are also strengthening, with increased flows in spring and autumn. In particular, in 2025, passenger traffic recorded notable growth—again driven by international markets—in January (+14.5%), February (+9%), March (+10.8%), and April (+9.1%), highlighting strong trends toward season extension at Greece’s largest air transport hub. Strong increases continued in November (+9.6%) and December 2025 as well.
