From 25 February 2026, the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) will become mandatory for all visitors to the United Kingdom.
The UK government announced that, following the launch of the system in April last year, the ETA requirement will be strictly enforced by airlines and other carriers from 25 February.
As a result, ETA is now a legal requirement for those traveling to or transiting through the country who are not British or Irish citizens.
According to an official government statement, from that date no visitor will be able to travel to the United Kingdom without a travel authorisation, whichwhere possiblewill be digitally linked to the travelers passport. Authorisation may be demonstrated through an ETA, eVisa, another accepted document, or an exemption.
Who Needs an ETA
The Electronic Travel Authorisation is required for passengers visiting or transiting through the United Kingdom who currently do not need a visa for short stays and who do not have valid immigration status in the UK prior to travel. Individuals who require a visa to visit the United Kingdom will continue to need one and should not apply for an ETA. Those exempt from immigration control will not need an ETA.
Fast and Digital Process
Applications for ETA are submitted electronically via an app or online, with travelers using the same passport they will present at boarding, as the authorisation is digitally linked to it.
UK authorities recommend submitting applications at least three working days before travel, although processing is usually completed very quickly. Support is available via webchat during UK working hours, as well as through an online contact form outside business hours.
Travel Industry Information
The UK government has updated the ETA Partner Pack, including informational material, videos, and communication tools in multiple languages, calling on travel organizations, carriers, and tourism professionals to help disseminate information.
The aim is to avoid boarding issues and ensure that all visitors are informed in good time about the new requirement.
