Greece is the big winner of this year’s International Tourism Fair in Berlin held March 7-11 as it is the most popular destination for Germans after Spain, according to data released on the occasion of the International Tourism Fair (ITB) taking place in Berlin.
On Wednesday, the 52nd International Tourism Fair (ITB) opened its doors in Berlin for about 110,000 industry specialists in the first three days and the weekend for the general public. The globally acclaimed tourism fair is attended by around 10,000 exhibitors from more than 180 countries around the world.
At the Greek Pavilion, 85 tourist and hotel organizations, regions and shipping companies are represented. From the bookings it appears that Greece is the most popular tourist destination of the Germans after Spain.
According to the available data, more than 4 million German tourists are expected to visit Greece this year while the German Market Research Institute (GfK) announces that local travel agencies have seen a 40 percent increase in sales for Greek destinations compared to last year.
This is despite the fact that there is a rise in bookings from Germany to Greece’s competitors in the region such as Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco.
The bookings for Turkey doubled this year compared with last year, while Egypt has recorded a 64 percent increase and occupies the fourth place in the preference of German tourists after Spain, Greece and Turkey.
Even though it is not yet certain that such an increase will be confirmed by the end of the year, GfK says that it certainly confirms a trend; from 2.27 million German holidaymakers in 2012, their number gradually increased to 3.7 million in 2017.
