“Greek products have their quality as their point of reference. This is their biggest weapon, especially in international trade,” Rural Development and Food Minister Vangelis Apostolou noted on Friday in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency’s radio station “Praktoreio 104.9 FM”, referring to the legal aspects of the Prespes agreement regarding trademarks and the procedures for the use of the term “Macedonian” for products originating in the Greek region.
“Those who make use of the name ‘Macedonian’ in a trade name must initiate the procedures for registering that brand name. Beyond that, they are protected within the European Union, whether these products are of certified quality or a geographical indication, they are protected by the European Union, not only within its own countries, but also in its agreements with third countries. Therefore, when the time comes, if it comes, for FYROM to join the process of accessing the European Union, all this will be discussed and they are already protected by the EU status. Should we rush to register the trade names? Let’s rush,” the minister pointed out.
