Minister: Tourism contributes 20.6% to Greek GDP

The handover ceremony between outgoing Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura and the newly appointed Minister Thanassis Theocharopoulos was held on Monday, according to ANA.

Kountoura pointed out that Greece has attracted 9 million more tourists during her four-year term, reaching 33 million tourists in 2018 including cruise ship visitors.

At the same time, the contribution of tourism to the economy, she said, is calculated at 37.5 billion euros, or 20.6 pct of Greece’s GDP. The growth rate of tourism is 3.5 times higher than that of the Greek and European economy, the minister said.
