A long and multi-year round of negotiations between Athens and Rome was concluded on Tuesday with the signing of a historic agreement to demarcate an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) between Greece and Italy, int.ert.gr reports.
The deal signed by the two countries foreign ministers, Nikos Dendias and Luigi di Maio, confirms the islands’ right to maritime zones, sending a message to all sides.
In a statement, Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, pointed out that the agreement recognizes sovereign rights in all territories, land and island, and is a model of cooperation and good neighborly relations.
In the same vein, the Greek Foreign Minister underlined after the signing of the agreement, that Athens’ constant goal is to delimit maritime zones with all its neighbors under international law and sent a clear message to Ankara, stressing that the delimitation of zones is achieved with valid agreements and not with inexistent ones like the one between Turkey and Libya.
