Cyprus President Anastasiades: We have very close cooperation with Athens

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades said that rumours over a crisis or disagreement between Nicosia and Athens are completely untrue noting that “on the contrary we have a very close cooperation” in an interview with the Sunday edition of Kathimerini newspaper.

Anastasiades claimed that the natural gas is a very important incentive for Ankara to agree on a solution for Cyprus. The prospect Turkey to cover a large part of its energy needs and its development into a regional energy hub can lead Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan to proceed with the necessary concessions that will make the agreement possible.

He said that the Turkish occupation troops must leave from Cyprus but he would accept a transitional period adding that he asks for a strong UN resolution to prevent Ankara’s retreat.

Finally, on the imminent negotiations in Geneva, Anastasiades clarified that the maps with the territorial adjustments must be tabled before the start of the meeting.
