Erdogan and Yildirim to meet with Turkish Cypriot 'PM'

Turkish Cypriot media, BRT, reported today that the occupied areas’ so-called ‘Prime Minister’ Huseyin Ozgurgun will visit Ankara to hold talks with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.

During his visit to Turkey, Ozgurgun will also meet with Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim.

BRT reported that Ozgurgun will meet with the Turkish leadership to discuss the upcoming Cyprus Problem negotiations between the Republic’s President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot chief Mustafa Akinci.

Ozgurgun is expected to meet with Yildirim at 10am and Erdogan at 1pm (Ankara Time).

According to BRT, Ozgurgun, Yildirim and Erdogan will also discuss ‘bilateral cooperation’ during their talks.

Ozgurgun’s visit follows on from so-called Turkish Cypriot ‘Republican Assembly Speaker’ Sibel Siber’s visit to Ankara and so-called ‘Foreign Affairs Minister’ Tahsin Ertugruloglu’s talks with Erdogan and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Akinci also makes regular visits to Turkey to hold similar talks.

CYPRUS PROBLEM TALKS

Anastasiades and Akinci decided earlier this month to resume their Swiss-based talks on January 9, 2017.

On January 11, they are expected to present their respective maps on the territorial chapter.

On January 12, the Conference on Cyprus will be convened with guarantor powers and other relevant parties.

Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May 2015 aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof, following Turkey’s 1974 invasion and illegal occupation on the island.
