For 2016, the survey scores and ranks in series (based on the methodology developed by the University of Passau, Germany) 176 countries according to the perception of the overall corruption that exists in each country.
The 2016 report noted that the countries with the lowest CPI in 2016 worldwide are Denmark, New Zealand and Finland, while the countries with the highest CPI are North Korea, South Sudan and Somalia.
In Europe, the countries with the lowest CPI are Denmark, Finland and Sweden and with those with the highest CPI are Italy, Greece and Bulgaria.
According to the press release, Cyprus’ CPI has dropped during the last years due to the fact that corruption cases have been brought to justice, with an increase being noted in the amount of corruption cases filed.
Transparency International ranks and scores have an important impact on ratings, and are taken into consideration by foreign investors and tourists who avoid visiting countries where corruption increases, the press release said.
The Corruption Perceptions Index was first published in 1995. It is the most recognisable tool of “Transparency International” in its fight against corruption.
It is a composite index, combining surveys and assessments on corruption, collected from a variety of reputable institutions.
