President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci have requested another international conference on Cyprus be held in early March, a UN announcement said on Wednesday.
After the leaders’ meeting, the UN announcement said Anastasiades and Akinci decided the following:
- – They will meet weekly through the month of February to address outstanding issues
- – The negotiators will continue their regular meetings
- – The leaders requested the United Nations to prepare, in consultation with the guarantor powers, for the continuation of the Conference on Cyprus at political level in early March.
Following his meeting with Akinci, President Anastasiades said that a constructive discussion was held on the way forward in the process.
Asked if the four basic freedoms were discussed, the President said they were not discussed.
Regarding statements made by Turkish authorities, President Anastasiades said: “I have raised the issue during my meeting yesterday (with the UN Secretary General Special Adviser) and during my meeting today.”
He added that if little is said the process can maintain its positive climate, “which we want to maintain in the dialogue in Cyprus, therefore any statements made, be they overly-optimistic or otherwise, do not contribute to what, at least, the two communities and the leaders of the two communities want.”
Asked if he is concerned about the tension between Greece and Turkey, President Anastasiades said that it is a negative factor, but “I want to believe that the issues will be overcome.”
The next leaders’ meeting is scheduled for February 9.
