Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades will be meeting with UN Secretary General Special Adviser Espen Barth Eide in the coming days, to discuss overcoming the hurdle in Cyprus talks and returning to negotiations with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, government spokesperson Nikos Christodoulides said on Tuesday.
In statements to Sigma’s Mesimeri kai Kati, Christodoulides noted that the President has requested the UN’s unbiased report on what has happened in the negotiating process.
The government spokesperson added it is important that the UN Secretary General is aware about what happened during the last meeting with Akinci, two weeks ago.
In relation to a letter President Anastasiades will send to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Christodoulides said that the President will not enter a blame game.
He noted that in the letter, the President will refer to the events that led to Akinci leaving negotiations. Christodoulides added that President Anastasiades will also explain the Greek Cypriot side’s goal to create the conditions that will allow both side s to return to the negotiating table.
The government spokesperson noted that the Cyprus problem will be solved at the negotiating table, adding that the conditions in Turkey however, are complicating the process.
He said that Turkey is currently focused on the referendum in April, which will bring important changes to their constitution.
Christodoulides added that Turkey is using the elections in 2018 and as a ploy against President Anastasiades, because Ankara cannot cover-up it weaknesses in the negotiating process.
