Lufthansa returns to 'Macedonia' airport in city of Thessaloniki after 17 years

Lufthansa returned to Thessaloniki and Macedonia airport on Friday, after 17 years of absence, according to ANA.

“It is something that actively demonstrates the trust that Lufthansa group has in both Macedonia airport and in northern Greece generally, which is already served by flights carried out by the two other airlines in our group for several years, Austrian and Swiss,” stressed Lufthansa sales manager for Greece and Cyprus Constantinos Tzevelekos.

The Airbus A320 that arrived in Thessaloniki from Frankfurt on Friday, carrying 50 passengers, was welcomed by the traditional water arch marking the resumption of the air connection.

On Fraport’s part, the general director for development of Fraport Greece Giorgos Vilos noted that the return of Lufthansa to Thessaloniki marks the potential of the destination. He underlined that Germany is one of the most important markets and the specific air service will strengthen the link with Frankfurt, which is a hub for air connections with other cities around the world.
