Cyprus president to streamline position with Athens before Geneva

Cyprus President Anastasiades will be travelling to Athens tomorrow morning for a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras at 10:15am, and announcement from the Presidential Palace said on Thursday.

The meeting will be held in the framework of the close cooperation between Cyprus and Greece on the Cyprus problem, the announcement added.

Nicosia and Athens will seek to increase their coordination ahead the conference on Cyprus in Geneva on January 12.

Government spokesperson Nikos Christodoulides and Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides will be present at the President’s meetings in Athens. 

The President is set to return from Athens on Friday.

In an interview with state TV on Thursday Christodoulides said that the President would inform the public before heading to Geneva.

Aside from informing the political party leadership and the National Council on January 5, the President of the Republic will inform the public on the latest developments, before heading to Geneva,” he said. 

The President will be informed on the results of a first meeting held between Greek and Turkish diplomats on Wednesday, he said. 

Regarding the presence of political party leaders at the Geneva talks, Christodoulides said that some of the leaders have already accepted.

President Anastasiades is expected to represent the Republic of Cyprus at Geneva talks.
