Turkey FM Cavusoglu criticises Athens on Cyprus talks' stance

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has launched criticism on Athens in regard to the Cyprus problem, saying, “Greece is the last country that should be blaming Turkey,” in statements to the press in Washington on Friday evening.

According to Sigma’s correspondent in Istanbul, Cavusoglu said that no country and no organisation can “blame” Turkey on the Cyprus problem.

We have reached a critical phase.  And at this critical phase, at the first meeting of ministers in the five-party conference, where the UN participated, Turkey was sure of itself and clearly said and wanted to show a constructive stance,” he said.

He added that the so called ‘TRNC’ showed the same stance as Turkey on all issues, “even on the sensitive subjects, where they showed a mature stance.

However, the Turkish Foreign Minister said that the other side was “unprepared,” and “abandoned the [negotiating] table.”

Specialist level talks

Cavusoglu also criticised the Greek Cypriot side, during their participation in specialist level talks in Mont Pelerin following the start of the Conference on Cyprus, affirming again that it was the “Greek Cypriots, who left the table for a break the first time, and the second time decided to abandon the table.”

Mont Pelerin talks at a deputy level were started on Wednesday and ended a day early on Thursday, with Sigma learning that talks were not moving forward.

Cavusoglu said that despite the issue, Turkey is continuing with a positive stance for negotiations to conclude with a clear framework.

The Turkish Foreign Minister reaffirmed that Ankara has a clear position on security and guarantees and has expressed it, while the other side has not made clear.
