Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the President of Germany, visited the ancient site of ancient Messene, near modern-day’s city of Kalamata in southern Peloponnese of Greece
Steinmeier arrived to the site on a small electric car and was accompanied by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos.
The German President with his wife were welcomed by professor Petros Themelis, the chief of the archaeological excavation in ancient Messene.
Most of the ancient site of Ancient Messene contains ruins of a major classical city-state named Messene.
The city was founded by Epaminondas in 369 BC, after the battle of Leuctra and the first Theban invasion of the Peloponnese peninsula.
This new Messene, today’s Ancient Messene, was established over the ruins of Ithome, an ancient city originally of Achaean Greeks, destroyed formerly by the Spartans.
