Greek Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Alexandros Papaioannou expressed his satisfaction concerning the US State Department’s welcoming reaction to the Greece-France defense agreement, during a regular briefing of diplomatic correspondents on Wednesday, ANA reports.
It is the first time that a bilateral agreement between Greece and a European partner or a NATO ally contains the clause of mutual emergency defense backing, noted Papaioannou. Under the agreement signed between the Greek and French leaders in Paris on Tuesday, each country has pledged to provide immediate military assistance to the other in the event of an attack by a third country, even if that country is a member of one of their alliances.
