The Carnival of Patra is tradition in Greece and everybody, not just the children are waiting for the festivities to begin!
The chariots, every year, are a special spectacle with themes taken from what is going on at the time in country and around the world.
On February 24th at 20:30′ everyone in Patra will have the chance to them on the parade in Saint George Square while on Saturday the 25th at 18:00′ the all night parade will take place. Finally on Sunday the 26th the official final Great Parade will start at 14:00′.
The crisis will again be the main theme of the parade with lots of humor of course. The chariot with the figure of the King of the Carnival will depict him on a ship dragged by common people and on the wheel the captain will be a stock exchange broker as the representative of international capitalism.
A total of seven main chariots will parade on Sunday.
Other carnival destinations
In the meanwhile, other major Greek carnival destinations are expected to mark the beginning of a strong tourism season with increasing bookings for the three-day Clean Monday holiday next week.
Popular ski destinations such as Arachova and Kalavryta expect occupancy rates to reach 80% while, on the contrary, traditional carnival destinations like Zakynthos and Drama are being hit by a garbage collection strike and farmer road blocks respectively.
“Demand plummeted when roadblocks were set up. At the moment, bookings are at 50 percent and we do not expect occupancy levels to exceed 60 percent,” Drama Hotel Association President Angelos Kallias noted to Greek newspaper Naftemporiki.
