Greek PM congratulates athletes of Belgrade’s 34th European Championships

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras congratulated the Greek athletes and medal winners of the 34th European Athletics Indoor Championships which were held between 3 and 5 March 2017 at the Kombank Arena in Belgrade.

Greece won gold with Katerina Stefanidi in pole vault, silver with Kostas Filippidis in the same event and bronze with Voula Papachristou in the triple jump.

The prime minister discussed with the Greek mission the problems they face during training due to the lack of facilities and promised to look into the issue, which it said would “take some time”.

“We have to think seriously, not just say nice words when you bring the results, but to build some facilities. Facilities that will boost sports on a large scale, because this is where new kids emerge, but also competitive sports, on a healthy and stable base,” he told the athletes.

“I think an effort is being made but we all have to understand that interest in sports and therefore public investments which of course need some time to pay off will have to be more geared towards directions where there was not much interest in the previous years,” he said.
