The Greek National Opera in Athens presents Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece, “Simon Boccanage”, in a big co-production with the Royal Opera House of London, int.ert.gr reports.
Giuseppe Verdi created one of the most outstanding baritone roles for Simon Boccanegra. Through the lips of the historical figure of the first Doge of Genoa, Verdi was able to express his own political thinking and ideals for a united Italy, far from fratricidal wars.
Verdi wrote the opera in 1857 and he reworked it in 1881 by adding some masterly scenes, based on Petrarch’s letters: one addressed to the historical figure of Boccanegra and another to the Doge of Venice.
In the Royal Opera House production, Moshinsky attempts an historical direction inspired by the art and architecture of Renaissance. The leitmotifs in his direction are constantly recurring images of the sea, symbolizing a reference to mortality.
Moshinsky is regarded one of the most important opera directors worldwide with a considerable, thirty-year long experience in theatre and opera. His repertory varies and comprises, among others, works of Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Wagner, Strauss etc. He has won three times the Laurence Olivier Award for best opera, for his performances Lohengrin, Stiffelio and The Rake’s Progress. He has systematically collaborated with the most famous opera houses in the world, such as the Royal Opera House in London, the New York Metropolitan Opera, the Sydney Opera, the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg etc.
