His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will host the third Halki Summit from May 31st to June 4th, 2019 in Turkey, according to a press release issued recently by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, greekreporter.com notes.
The summit will convene distinguished representatives from Orthodox theological schools and seminaries all over the planet, and focus on the theme of ”Theological Formation and Ecological Awareness.”
Some fifty delegates from more than forty institutions will be in attendance.
Halki Summit III is being held as an inter-Orthodox working conference.
The participants will hear addresses by prominent Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Protestant environmental theologians. They will discuss ways in which ecological awareness can be boosted and advanced in Orthodox institutions of higher learning throughout the world by means of courses and other programs related to creation care.
The ultimate goal will be to promote environmental sensitivity in the core curricula of theological institutions by continuing the spirit of dialogue and exchange expressed during the two previous summits. The Ecumenical Patriarchate has repeatedly expressed longstanding concerns, and initiated ongoing projects, for over three decades regarding the protection of the natural environment.
The first two summits convened activists and scientists, journalists and business leaders, theologians and academics, in order to engage and cooperate across intellectual disciplines and boundaries. The Halki Summit I was held in June of 2012, and focused on the theme of ”Global Responsibility and Environmental Sustainability.”
Halki Summit II was organized in June of 2015, and assembled pioneers and experts from around the world in a conversation on environment, literature and the arts.
Among the attendees will be His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, His Eminence Elder Metropolitan John of Pergamon, Professor Fred Bahnson, Fr. Roman Bozyk, along with many more distinguished personalities.
Bartholomew’s efforts to promote ecology and the protection of the environment have been widely noted during the years, and these endeavors have earned him the honorary title “The Green Patriarch.”
