Europa Nostra hosts award ceremony in ancient Greek site of Marathon

The imposing and minimal archaeological site of the Marathon Tomb, one of Greece’s iconic historical landscapes, was chosen by Europa Nostra to host its award ceremony, int.ert.gr reports.

The international heritage organization awarded the program of the Hellenic Society for the Environment and Culture (ELETT), with the European Prize on the Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra 2019 Award.

At a special event open to the public, the Europa Nostra and Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation President, Hermann Parzinger, awarded the European Heritage Prize to ELETT, emphasizing the program’s significance in the fields of sustainable development and awareness of the value and protection of historic and environmentally valuable landscapes.

“The ‘Paths of Culture’ are an excellent example of integrating the cultural heritage and the natural landscape. The project has a large community base that includes many local municipalities and local civil society organizations, and its contribution to economic sustainability and the development of local entrepreneurship is indisputable”, pointed out Hermann Parzinger.

ELLET President, Lydia Karra, who conceived of the program nearly eight years ago, received the award, welcoming the recognition of a program that combines environmental protection and cultural heritage, as well as contributing to sustainable development while making each invested euro in profitable for local communities.
