The 2020 San Francisco Greek Film Festival, which takes place from October 3 to October 10, will go virtual and also hold drive-in screenings to keep festival attendees safe during the pandemic, according to greekreporter.com.
The drive-in screening of “Topkapi” featuring famous Greek actress Melina Mercouri took place on October 4. “Topkapi” is being screened in order to celebrate the year of Melina Mercouri.
All other screenings will be held virtually; tickets for the films are free, though donations are highly encouraged and appreciated.
The film festival’s director, Maria Nicolacakis, pointed out the committee’s decision to proceed with the festival. “During this difficult time in our world, our team felt strongly it was important to continue to celebrate the Greek and Cypriot films produced this year.” Featured directors include Savvas Stavrou, Arianna Papalexopoulos, and Ariane Labed.
Thus, even though attendees can’t come together in person, they can still unite online to mark Greek heritage and cinema by viewing a slew of handpicked films in this year’s lineup for the 17th San Francisco Greek Film Festival.
