Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has announced on Twitter that he will be Roberto Martinez’s assistant manager for the Belgium national team.
In a tweet, Henry wrote: “Honoured to be [Belgium] assistant coach. Thanks to Roberto Martinez & the Royal Belgian Football Association. Very excited. Can’t wait.”
Although it is not yet clear if Henry has assumed his new role immediately, it looks like the ex-France star could be heading to the island when Belgium face Cyprus at Nicosia’s GSP Stadium on September 6 for their opening 2018 World Cup qualifier.
Upon hanging up his boots two years ago, the iconic number 14 had coached Arsenal’s youth sides but left to continue his role as a Sky Sports pundit.
During his distinguished playing career, Henry played for Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal, Barcelona and New York Red Bulls.
He was capped 123 times for France, scoring 51 goals.
The match against Cyprus will be ex-Everton boss Martinez’s first official game in charge for the Red Devils.
Both sides were also drawn together in their UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying group with Belgium winning 5-0 at home on March 28, 2015 and 1-0 in Nicosia on September 6.
