United States Senate passes resolution recognizing Armenian genocide by Turks

The US Senate unanimously passed a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide by the Ottoman Empire in a move likely to provoke Turkey’s reaction, further aggravating Ankara-Washington relations, according to int.ert.gr.

The resolution asserts that it is U.S. policy to commemorate as genocide the killing of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1923.

Turkey accepts that many Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire were killed in clashes with Ottoman forces during World War One, but contests the numbers and denies that the killings were systematically orchestrated and constitute a genocide.

Adopting the resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide is a “victory for justice and truth,” noted Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

“On behalf of the Armenian people, I express our gratitude to the United States Congress,” Pashinyan posted on Twitter. The resolution ratified today is “a courageous step towards preventing genocides in the future”, he continued.

The latest US moves jeopardize bilateral relations, claimed Turkey’s presidential communications director Fahrettin Altun.

“The sanctions bill passed yesterday by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Armenian resolution adopted today in the Senate, endanger the future of our bilateral relations,” Altun added.
