Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos’ prophetically-name period comedy-drama “The Favourite” has once again lived up to its name, with no less than 10 nominations in this year’s Oscar race, including those for best picture, best director and best actress (Olivia Colman), ANA reports.
“The Favourite” takes the lead for the most nominations, in a tie with Alfonso Cuaron’s black-and-white epic “Roma”.
The nominations for the 91st Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday, with “The Favourite” also contending for best supporting actress (Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz), best original screenplay, photography, editing, cinematography, production design and costume design.
Based on the true story of Queen Anne, portrayed by Olivia Colman, and the dysfunctional court set up by the last member of the Stewart dynasty, Lanthimos’ comedy-drama touches on universal themes, such as love, competition and power.
