Glamping established in Greece: What is provided for beds, star classification, and accessibility

A new institutional framework for glamping in Greece is being introduced by the Ministry of Tourism, setting clear operating conditions for organized luxury camping accommodations (glamping). This new hospitality model, which combines staying in nature with high-level services, now acquires specific specifications regarding capacity, accessibility and star classification, aiming at sustainable development and qualitative upgrading of the glamping product in the country.

A clear and strict operating framework for organized luxury camping accommodations (glamping) is being established by the Ministry of Tourism, seeking to regulate a rapidly growing sector that combines luxury hospitality with sustainable living in nature.

The new framework defines operating conditions, accessibility specifications and a star-rating classification system, bringing glamping closer to the standards of high-category hotel units.

Limits on beds and distances
According to Article 1, each glamping unit may not exceed four beds per structure, plus an additional two beds for children. At the same time, accommodation structures must be placed at a minimum distance of ten meters from each other, in order to ensure privacy and a sense of connection with nature, which is the core of the glamping experience.

Special emphasis is placed on preserving the natural landscape, with mandatory vegetation cover required to account for at least 50% of the total area, in order to provide natural shading and environmental protection. Internal movement within the campsites must be carried out using environmentally friendly means, while ensuring comfort and safety for visitors.

Accessibility obligations
Under Article 2, glamping units fall under the provisions of Article 26 of Law 4067/2012 (A’79) regarding the service of persons with disabilities and persons with reduced mobility.

Autonomous and safe access for persons with disabilities and persons with reduced mobility is required, as well as their service in all outdoor and indoor areas of buildings and accommodation structures, without barriers and in accordance with the Design Guidelines of the Ministry of Environment and Energy “Designing for All”.

For the installation of new glamping structures, the preparation of an accessibility study is required.

In addition, at least 5% of the total capacity must be specially designed for persons with disabilities.

Classification only in 4 and 5 stars
According to Article 3, organized luxury camping accommodations (glamping) are mandatorily classified into two star categories, with the highest being five stars and the lowest being four stars.

Businesses will receive certification provided they meet specific technical and operational specifications, while a minimum number of points from optional scored criteria will also be required (6,000 points for 4 stars and 7,000 points for 5 stars). The process will follow the existing certification regime applied to hotels and tourist camps.
