Chios: First Chinese Weddings Open a New Chapter in Wedding Tourism

The path for Chios to make a dynamic entry onto the international wedding tourism map was opened in the summer of 2025 with the organization of four traditional weddings for couples from China, as part of a targeted collaboration between the Municipality of Chios, local industry professionals, and international institutional bodies of the Chinese wedding industry.

The initiative was implemented by the Municipality of Chios and the Department of Development, Entrepreneurship, Shipping, and Tourism, in cooperation with local wedding planners, with a clear goal of highlighting Chios’s authentic identity, cultural heritage, and local customs through wedding tourism. At the same time, it served as a practical example of an outward-looking tourism strategy with an international focus.

The action was the culmination of the tourism collaboration initiated in 2024, when a Chios delegation visited China, including the mayor’s special advisor, Paraskevi Potamousi, and the Deputy Mayor of Tourism, Georgios Christakis. Following an official invitation from the Mayor of Chios, Ioannis Malafis, the couples traveled to the island to hold their weddings in locations of unique natural and cultural interest, following Chios’s traditional customs, with local costumes and products.

Meanwhile, a new phase in the collaboration opened with a visit by a high-level Chinese delegation to Chios and the signing of a friendly cooperation agreement between the Chinese Wedding Industry Committee and the municipal authorities. The ceremony took place at Chios Town Hall, attended by Maria Zisouli, the mayor of Chios, the deputy mayor of tourism, municipal officials, local business owners, and Cao Zhonghua, president of the Chinese Wedding Industry Committee of the Chinese Association for the Promotion of Traditional Culture.

The agreement marks the official start of long-term cooperation focused on promoting wedding tourism, cultural exchange, and sustainable tourism development, opening a channel for Chios to access one of the most dynamic markets internationally.

The Chinese delegation included 18 members, among them heads of institutional wedding industry bodies from major regions of China. Their presence added significant prestige to the initiative, as they represent the internationally recognized “Rose Wedding” institution, active since 1998 in organizing international wedding ceremonies and linking China with top global tourist destinations.

This initiative contributed to the creation of a comprehensive portfolio to promote Chios as a wedding tourism destination in the Chinese market, with an emphasis on organizing ceremonies outside peak periods. At the same time, it supports efforts to extend the tourist season and enhances the island’s international image, combining authenticity, culture, and sustainability.

Finally, the Municipality of Chios expressed its gratitude to the businesses, cultural associations, and organizations that supported the initiative, confirming that wedding tourism can serve as a tool for targeted development and international networking for the island.
