Kenyan runner John Kipkorir Komen, 42, won the 37th Athens Authentic Marathon on Sunday, ANA reports.
It was his second time running the Athens race.
Kipkorir Komen arrived at Panathenaic Stadium after clocking 2 hours, 16 minutes and 34 seconds. Almost 600 meters before the end, he passed Ruanda’s Felicien Muhitia (2:16.43), while Kostas Gelaouzos, of Greece, came third with 2:19:02.
Gelaouzos is Greece’s top Athens Marathon runner for the third time in a row.
The domination of Kenyan runners in the Athens Marathon began in 2001 and continues to the present, excepting the years 2003 and 2011 when a runner from Tanzania and one from Morocco won, respectively.
In women’s timing, Eleftheria Petroulaki came first with 2:45:50, her best timing at the event ever. She is the top Greek female athlete in the event for the second year in a row. SEGAS did not invite elite female runners from abroad this year.
