The Athens and Epidaurus Festival artistic director, Vangelis Theodoropoulos, revealed the program for the 2019 edition, which features some of the biggest names of the international theater stage. At the press conference, held at the Athens Conservatory, he spoke about the festival’s positive assessment, which is evidenced both by the increase in the number of spectators as well as by the venues’ occupancy rates and the increase in revenues.
“Over the past two years, the artistic program has gradually begun to find its character and the festival has increased in audience and has won the trust both of the spectators and the media”, Mr. Theodoropoulos noted.
The festival’s program for 2019 includes eight performances at the ancient theater of Epidaurus (main stage) and seven at the little theater. The ancient theater will feature world renowned theater directors such as Belgian Ivo Van Hove who will present Electra/Orestes with the prestigious Comedie Française and Robert Wilson who will stage Oedipus.
The Little Epidaurus stage remains a space for research on ancient drama for emerging directors who focus on alternative perspectives of the tragic while linking it with the modern world.
