Green light for the presentation and reburial of antiquities at Asteria Glyfada

The General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture approved a study for the presentation and reburial of archaeological finds within the area of the Asteria Glyfada complex, due to the good state of preservation of the antiquities and the importance of the site of their discovery for the Attic deme of Aixone. The fixed and movable finds document a diachronic palimpsest, with use ranging from the Prehistoric period (2650–2200/2150 BC) through to the Late Roman and Early Byzantine period (5th–6th century AD), directly related to the operation and activities of the commercial zone of the ancient harbor.

The cost of the archaeological works, including presentation, conservation, and documentation of movable finds, as well as analyses, will be covered by the project owner.

The approval is granted under conditions, in accordance with the relevant drawings of the proposal for the presentation of the two-room building and the reburial of the remaining antiquities of the excavation trench.

In this context, it is requested that an area extending over the northern and northeastern section of the triangular junction be excluded from reburial, where the two-room ancient building is developed, as well as a perimeter zone of at least 0.50 m around it. In addition, the ancient two-room building, dated to the Archaic period, will be presented. In the area developed around the ancient building, near and in contact with the parking spaces, a zone must be created for planting medium-height evergreen shrubs, in order to delimit the archaeological site and visually isolate the monument from parked vehicles. Furthermore, protection of the ancient building from weather conditions must be provided, with the proposed solution being the construction of a shelter.

At the same time, it is requested that the parking spaces be located at a specific point in the southern zone of the triangular junction, as depicted in the drawings of the relevant study. In the event that antiquities are revealed during the construction of the eastern parking spaces, works will be temporarily halted and an excavation investigation with full archaeological documentation will follow. Moreover, it is noted that all necessary measures must be taken to protect the antiquities during the construction of the parking spaces, until the execution of conservation and presentation works of the ancient monument.
