The 59th Thessaloniki International Film Festival (TIFF), which includes a total of 253 films; 164 features and 89 shorts, opened on Thursday, November 1st, at the Olympion cinema with the film “Shoplifters” by Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-Eda, who won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The event, which will run through Sunday, November 11, will conclude with the film “Girl” by 27-year-old Belgian director Loukas Dodd, who won awards for best direction, performance, Queer Palm and Fipresci at the Cannes Film Festival.
The program presents 20 feature-length Greek films, 12 of which are premieres. Furthermore, 10 short films will be screened as a tribute to multi-awarded Greek animator Jordan Ananiadis 7 short films of emerging Greek artists selected by the Greek Directors’ Association, as well as 17 award-winning short films from the 41st Short Film Festival in Drama.
Spanish filmmaker Jaime Rosales, Dutch director Nanouk Leopold and Chilean visual artists-filmmakers Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña will be honored in the tributes of the 59thThessaloniki International Film Festival. The filmmakers will participate the festival to present and discuss their work with the Thessaloniki audiences.
This year, TIFF presents a tribute to Greek queer cinema through 38 short and feature films from the late ’60s to present day, while the unseen aspects of education will be explored in the tribute “Life lessons”.
