Celebrating International Museum Day on May 18 in Greece

The theme of this year’s International Museum Day (18/5), as elected by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) was “Museums as Cultural Nodes: The Future of Tradition”, int.ert.gr reports.

Reflecting on its rationale, for this year’s theme, ICOM stresses that: “The museums, apart from the protection and highlighting of cultural heritage, they have become key points of communication between peoples and cultures. They develop collaborations and create networks for the exchange of ideas and experiences. Preserving with respect historical memory and tradition, they seek new orientations to inspire people and serve their needs. In this context, the Museums with their multifaceted actions strive to respond to the challenges of modern society and to achieve the difficult balance between heritage and innovation, contributing to the building of a better future. ”

On May 18, the entry to all of Greece’s museums is free. Moreover, from May 8 to 23, a number of exhibitions, educational programs and other events will take place in several museums and other cultural institutions. All this information is included in a special publication issued by ICOM’s Hellenic Department.
