The new museum of Basil and Elise Goulandris is situated next to the Agios Spyridon square in the Pagrati district, housed in a 7,250 sq. m 11-story building.
The museum showcases one of the most significant private art collections of the second half of the 20th century. The founders’ primary aim was to make this collection accessible to the public. On the first and second floors, visitors can find the works by famous painters such as Paul Cézanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Jean Monet, Edgar Degas, Auguste Rodin, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Vassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Jackson Pollock, Francis Bacon, Alberto Giacometti, Mark Chagall, Giorgio de Chirico and others.
Even though Basil and Eliza Goulandris were already surrounded by prominent art historians and professionals from the early 1950s, the works they chose the works they collected solely on the basis of their personal preferences. For nearly 50 years they built their collection with care, patience and dedication, with the ultimate aim to exhibit it at the museum they were planning to create.
Since the start of their collection, Vassilis and Eliza Goulandris have long wanted to give a special place to their compatriots such as George Bouzianis, Yiannis Tsarouchis, Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Gikas, Yiannis Moralis and Michalis Tombros. They also gave the Foundation’s Board of Directors the guidance to continue supporting young Greek artists by granting scholarships for studies, but also by enriching the collection with new works.
The new museum will also host temporary exhibitions presenting Greek and foreign artists. The museum also houses in its premises, a café-restaurant, a shop, a 190-seat amphitheater, an art library and a children’s workshop.
The entire collection of the Vasilis & Elisas Goulandris Foundation will gradually be featured on the Goulandris museum website.
