Two Greek museums, the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Corinth and the Angelos Sikelianos Museum on Lefkada, are among the nominees for the European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) for 2020, according to int.ert.gr.
The nominations were announced at the European Museum Forum, which gives out the award.
The European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) was founded in 1977, under the auspices of the Council of Europe, with the aim to award every year, the best museum practice in Europe and encourage innovative actions in museums. The award is given each year at the EMF’s annual conference, at recently opened museums or at recently renovated museums. The 2020 conference will take place in Cardiff, Wales, from April 29 to May 2.
The Museum of Ancient Corinth was constructed in 1932 to house the numerous objects brought to light by the archaeological excavations carried out in the area. In 2015 a large-scale work was completed in the east and south wings. The museum now hosts a new exhibition on ancient Corinth, from the Geometric Period, until its destruction by the Romans in 146 BC. The project was co-funded by the NSRF 2007-2013.
The Angelos Sikelianos Museum, which houses the Museum, was bought by the National Bank of Greece in 2009. It was renovated and transformed into a groundbreaking museum space that was delivered to the municipality of Lefkada and opened on October 6, 2017.
