Greek police confirm human remains in Malia belong to missing British tourist

Greek police confirmed on Saturday that the remains found at the bottom of a well on February 16 in the town of Malia, Crete, belong to 20-year-old British national Steven Cook, who went missing more than eleven years ago while holidaying in the area.

Cook disappeared on September 1, 2005, on the first day of his holidays.

“The DNA tests conducted at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations showed the genetic type of bone found on February 16, 2017 in Malia, Crete, was identified […] with the profile sent through Interpol, which concerned a national of the United Kingdom who disappeared on September 1, 2005, in the same area,” police said in a press release.

The police station in Hersonissos is conducting a preliminary investigation into the findings.
