Greeks Among the Most Generous People in the World – 7th Globally

Greeks are ranked among the most generous people in the world, according to a new global study that measures generosity not as a financial act but as a way of life. Greece occupies 7th place globally, with an average generosity score of 47.62 out of 60, making it one of four European countries in the top 10 of the international ranking.

The research was conducted by Remitly, with participation from over 4,500 individuals across 25 countries. It was based on the Interpersonal Generosity Scale, a scientifically validated psychological tool that measures generosity as a set of behaviors.

Generosity Beyond Money: Empathy, Care, and Daily Support

Unlike traditional approaches that link generosity solely to charity or financial giving, this study focuses on traits such as empathy, emotional support, patience, kindness, and the willingness to put others’ needs before one’s own. Participants were asked to indicate the extent to which they identified with specific statements, reflecting a broader social and cultural footprint of generosity.

Greece’s Place on the Global Generosity Map

At the top of the ranking is South Africa with a score of 51.57, followed by the Philippines and the United States. Greece closely follows countries such as Portugal and the United Kingdom, while Ireland and Canada are just ahead. Overall, four European countries make it into the top ten, highlighting the role of social cohesion and daily solidarity in the European way of life.

What the Findings Reveal About Social Culture

The study emphasizes that countries ranking high are not necessarily those making the largest financial donations, but those where citizens consistently demonstrate care and support in everyday life. In Greece’s case, its high ranking is associated with hospitality, family cohesion, and a focus on human relationships, traits that remain strong even during periods of economic and social challenges.
