A 42-year old alleged to be involved in the beating and serious injury of a 24-year-old university student in the Athens district of Ampelokipi on Friday afternoon was arrested on Saturday. The suspect is the owner of a cafeteria in which gather members of extreme-right party Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avghi). According to information, the perpetrators were retaliating for an attack with sledgehammers and paint against the Golden Dawn offices on nearby Messogion Avenue by unknown assailants. Police sources said there is no evidence indicating that the student was involved in the attack against GD’s offices and was probably targeted because of a backpack he was carrying.
The victim is being hospitalised and is not in condition to give evidence on the attack. The incident was reported by a local resident who witnessed the assault and called police’s emergency response unit. According to initial evidence, the attackers were sitting at a café when they saw the student walk by, attacked him and brutally beat him until he fell unconscious. They also stole his backpack which contained a camera, a mobile phone and several documents and fled. Police is conducting an investigation to locate the perpetrators.
