Discovery of new bodies raises death toll from west Attica flash floods

The body of a man discovered inside a warehouse near the Mandra municipality vehicle depot, as well as two bodies found at sea, has raised the death toll from the devastating flash floods in west Attica to at least 19, the fire brigade announced on Saturday.

Talking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA), a fire brigade spokesman noted that the operation to recover the dead man’s body was taking place with extreme caution due to a serious propane leak in the vicinity of the warehouse.

Meanwhile, the coast guard reported the discovery of two dead men in the bay of Elefsina. Following an operation to recover the bodies, one of which required the assistance of a diving team, they were taken to the Thriasio Hospital in an ambulance. They were later identified by relatives as the remains of a 59-year-old man and a 29-year-old man, who had been reported missing after the deadly floods in west Attica on Wednesday.

According to data released by the fire brigade on Saturday, it has responded to a total of 984 calls to pump water from the basements of homes and shops in Mandra, Megara and Nea Peramos since the deadly floods on Wednesday. It has also helped evacuate 96 people trapped in the houses and cars to safety. A total of 155 firemen and 46 vehicles, forming 56 rescue and assistance crews, were deployed in response to the disaster.

The fire brigade has also received a total of 480 calls for assistance from the wider Katerini area due to the bad weather. It has deployed 25 fire men in 10 teams that have so far responded to 190 incidents where water had to be pumped from flooded basements and 56 people were taken to safety.
