The Greek police force (ELAS) has dispatched hundreds of officers and increased patrols in areas of western Attica that suffered widespread damage in flash floods last week amid reports of looting.
A total of 249 additional police officers from various units have been transferred to the towns of Mandra and Nea Peramos from other parts of the capital to assist a force of 1,421 officers that has been in place since November 16, a day after the floods that claimed 20 lives and destroyed hundreds of properties.
Police have made 12 arrests so far of suspects accused of robbing houses and businesses in the area. They also urge citizens to report any incidents of looting on tel 213.152.1657 and 213.152.1592 or the police emergency number 100.
