Traffic disruptions in Athens this week due to Erdogan visit

The urban bus organisation (OASA) and the Greek police on Tuesday announced modifications of schedules and routes this week due to protest rallies and the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Buses, trolleys and tram schedules at the center of Athens will be affected from 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday to 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, depending on the rallies organised in memory of teenager Alexandros Grigoropoulos, who was killed by police in 2008, OASA stated.

The metro stations in Syntagma and Panepistimio will also be shut down from 12:00-16:00 on Wednesday, due to the planned Grigoropoulos demonstrations. The decision was taken by order of the police.

Buses and trolleys will also be affected by Erdogan’s visit in central Athens from 6:00 a.m. on Thursday to the end of his visit on Friday. Traffic on the bus lane on Panepistimiou Street from Sina to Syntagma Square and traffic on Vassileos Georgiou will be interrupted; otherwise, drivers will be redirected by police as necessary.

Tram section to close down for improvements at Syntagma

In an unrelated development, the Athens tram operator (STASY) announced it will interrupt service between central Syntagma Square and Leoforos Vouliagmenis as of December 10 (Sunday) to March 10, 2018, the operator STASY said on Tuesday, in order to upgrade the platforms at Syntagma Square.

The terminal will be moved to the Leoforos Vouliagmenis stop, where passengers will be able to connect to the existing bus lines and to Line 2 (the red line) at the Syngrou-Fix station.
