The “Sophia” cold front made itself felt throught Greece as several areas experienced heavy snowfall and several events or scheduled routes are being cancelled throughout the day, ANA reports.
So far, the weather has affected travel and shut down a ski centre (in Seli). The low temperatures will continue to Saturday, with some reaching several degrees below zero overnight, especially in northern Greece.
Some of the changes/cancellations are listed below:
- Fllights to Thessaloniki from Hamburg, Athens, Dusseldorf and Berlin had to be diverted to Kavala.
- The Stockholm-Thessaloniki flight was diverted to Athens.
- Two flights from Doha and Baden were cancelled.
- Penteli-Nea Makri peripheral road closed down due to snow.
- Police said they have banned traffic from the 414 Military Hospital to the Panorama, in both traffic directions.
- The Seli-Vermio Skiing Centre shuts down due to snowstorm; to reopen on the weekend. In Trikala, however, the Pertouli Skiing Centre west is open for business, with all roads cleared of now.
- Pedion tou Areos events for children cancelled by Attica Region due to weather.
