Coronavirus cases stabilize in Greece as officials warn against laxness for long weekend

Greek Health Ministry’s coronavirus spokesman and infectious diseases professor Sotiris Tsiodras on Thursday evening quelled uncertainties about the reopening of schools and explained that the decision was taken because children seem to get less ill than adults and do not transmit the virus as easily as adults, ANA reports.

He said that 14 countries in Europe had taken a similar decision, except for Spain and Italy, which will reopen schools again in September. He underlined that “the lifting of measures was experimental and continues to be experimental,” depending on day to day developments and updated information about the virus.

The professor also announced 15 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Greece in the last 24 hours and one new death.

Furthermore, Deputy Sports Minister Lefteris Avgenakis on Thursday evening outlined the partial lifting of coronavirus restrictions for individual and collective sports activities and sports facilities.

Effective as of Tuesday, May 5 and until mid-May, when measures will be revised, as he pointed out, individual training at sports facilities will only be allowed for professional athletes who have already qualified or are qualifying for the Olympic Games.

All other non-professional athletes, including junior league athletes, will only be allowed outdoor training and for low-risk personal sports only.
