After a COVID-19 outbreak at a funeral attended by some 200 people, the Greek police are spreading inspections for violations beyond individuals and businesses to parties, funerals, and weddings to try to contain the Coronavirus.
One man, not named, was fined 4,350 euros ($5,096.92) for hosting an engagement giant party in Achaia in the Peloponnese, violating an edict limiting gatherings to 50 people, the New Democracy government not explaining why people couldn’t be affected under that.
He also faces charges of disturbing the peace after operating a sound system into the early hours and because his guests spilled out from his home and into the street, obstructing traffic, said Kathimerini.
According to police sources, the guests at the engagement party were not wearing protective face masks as required, nor keeping a safe social distance, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis instead appealing to people to obey, many refusing to do so.
He was credited with saving lives after bringing a lockdown in March, closing non-essential businesses up to 10 weeks but cases spiked after it was gradually lifted and tourists were allowed into the country starting in July.
Parties were prevalent on islands such as Mykonos and have continued despite government warnings about the dangers and few reports of people being fined, and as young people continue to spill into Athens public squares when nightclubs, restaurants, and bars close at midnight as required.
