Sharp rise doubles viral load in sewage of northern Greek city of Thessaloniki

Samples taken from Thessaloniki’s sewage this week have revealed a sharp spike in the SARS-CoV-2 viral load, which has doubled since previous measurements on February 1 and 3, the research team conducting the study revealed on Tuesday, according to ANA.

The joint Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) and local water board (EYATh) scientific team, led by AUTh rector Nikos Papaioannou, took the latest samples on Friday and Sunday, February 5 and 7. They said the viral load in the city’s sewage matched the concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 detected on October 20 but was not yet at the levels seen at the end of October when they had begun to rise exponentially.
