One would expect that the new generations of Greek expatriates in the US would not necessarily focus on dining and catering, as their fathers and grandfathers had to.
Yet, it is not exactly so. According to PanGregorian, more than 200 “souvlaki” joints operate in New York alone and the trend keeps getting stronger.
Not only in Queens, but also in the “heart” of Manhattan, souvlaki canteens – or “trolleys” as Greek Americans call them – keep popping up.
All registered businesses are owned by Greeks but do not target solely Greek clientele. A perfect example is Nikos Karagiorgou’s canteen which appeared on Park Avenue in 1971 and, since then, the owner and his brother have added traditional Greek meals, according to their mother’s recipes.
