Small Greek firms impress with donkey milk, olive oil soap, Canal Dive craft beer

ATHENS – Canal Dive Greek craft beer tried to start up in 2012, as the country’s economic crisis was worsening, but it took two years because of bureaucratic red tape.

Now it’s one of the hidden tastes of Greece and a showcase for the entrepreneurial spirit of people who didn’t succumb but worked their way through hard times.

“It’s doing well and it’s an innovative beer,” Sales Manager Nikki Nikkolopoulou told The National Herald at the Tastes of Greece fair in an Athens suburb where scores of companies displayed products from pasta to agricultural goods, travel magazines, olive oil, honey, meats, jams, beverages, cheese, ouzo, dairy goods, spring water, wines, pasteli, herbs and ceramics.

“In Greece what goes best is systemic beer,” such as marketing giants like Fix, Mythos, Alfa, and Heineken, Nikkolopoulou said “But the culture of fresh beer is now entering the market,” she said, carving out a niche and gaining fast in popularity.
